Varieties of Christian Worship Spaces in Birmingham

You have reached the heart of Spaces for Worship: A Birmingham-Based Introduction. This page is the gateway to studies of eight types of worship spaces. Each study focuses on a primary example, but includes others as well. Each type of space is also found around the world. The eight are linked in rough order of their prevelance in Birmingham. You may start by clicking on any of the images below, or to work through them in recommended order click here.

The focus these profiles is on liturgical arrangement, less so architectural style. To learn more about those, you may see my essay in the Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Religion and the Arts in the West: Renaissance to the Present I present a broader overview of architectural history covered here. For a Birmingham-specific introduction see Schnorrenberg, Aspiration: Birmingham’s Historic Houses of Worship. This discussion will employ concepts I developed in Spaces for Worship‘s framework section. If you haven’t read it, you may wish to. If you are unfamiliar with Birmingham’s history and worship ecology, you may wish to look at the historical section before continuing here.
