About

The mission of Magic City Religion is to encourage Samford University undergraduates to study the many dimensions of the religious life of Birmingham, Alabama. By sharing their findings we hope to advance the public understanding of religions’ roles in our common life.

Magic City Religion was launched in 2019. It features 124 essays on religion and related topics in Birmingham, Alabama, by 180 Samford University students. Thus far, all of the essays have been written by students in courses with Dr. David R. Bains of Samford’s Department of Biblical & Religious Studies, but other Samford faculty are welcome to have their students contribute. Read this introduction for more information on our website.

In 2024, Spaces for Worship: A Birmingham-Based Introduction was released as a special section of the website written by David R. Bains. It was supported by a grant from Samford University’s Center for Worship and the Arts.

    1. Thank you! Yes, I was disappointed that I didn’t get a student to do Avondale. One or two students did it for her initial report but then chose another for the detailed report. I believe I had a student group doing it last spring pre-Covid, but that had to be abandoned due to Covid. I was going to lead a tour of Avondale churches last spring. Avondale UMC was the starting point and star of that tour, but again that had to be abandoned due to Covid.

  1. What happened to me is a reason to believe in God. I was interviewed by a Catholic radio station about it. The interview is at

I was also interviewed by Star Jones. You can see this interview at

In a nutshell, I offered to give a lecture/lesson on God’s existence to the minister of Columbia University. Columbia responded by threatening me with a lawsuit if I contacted anyone else at Columbia with this offer. I filed a freedom of speech lawsuit against Columbia that was dismissed. The lawsuit brought me to the attention of Marquis Who’s Who in America and I was selected for the 73rd edition. In effect, I am winning the lawsuit in the court of public opinion.

The lecture lesson is at http://www.academia.edu with the title: “Lecture Title: Why We Know God Exists.”

    Very truly yours,

    David Roemer
